Wildlife in Tasmania
Wildlife in Tasmania
Tasmania is home to many species of wildlife that are found nowhere else (including the world’s largest carnivorous marsupial), and many of them are in great abundance. Being isolated from the mainland, Tasmania has had less problem with introduced predators than the Australian mainland, and large expanses of wonderful wilderness still remains. It is hard to stop taking photos once you arrive in the mountains.

Along the wild rivers and in the deep forests and mountain ranges you may find the Tasmanian devil, pademelons, spotted-tailed quolls, eastern quolls, the Forester kangaroo (mainland Eastern grey), Bennett’s wallabies, possums, wombats and platypus. But you don’t always have to hike far into the wilds (wonderful as that experience is) – many of these animals can often be seen at picnic grounds, ecolodges and other easily-accessible locations.
Along the coast you may encounter migratory shorebirds from as far afield as Siberia. Look for plovers, oystercatchers, black swans, egrets, cormorants, pelicans, terns, shearwaters and birds of prey. The coastline is also home to numerous marine mammals including dolphins, Australian fur seals, Southern right whales and Humpback whales, as well as little (fairy) penguins.
One of the most accessible places to see a wild Peregrine falcon in Australia is right in the heart of Hobart, Tasmania’s capital city. The city itself has a lovely, easy-going atmosphere, unlike the hustle and bustle of many other major cities.
Tasmania is also a little known but fantastic site for diving enthusiasts.
